Masslive: Northampton Open Media and Northampton High School wins regional Emmy

When Jeromie Whalen applied for a regional Emmy for the Young@Heart’s 40th-anniversary concert video, he knew they were going up against larger news outlets with extensive budgets.

However, the communications and media production teacher at Northampton High School said he wanted to prove that community media could produce meaningful and quality productions.

What he didn’t expect was for the video to receive an Emmy in the special events category on June 10, competing against NBC 10 Boston and WCVB in their category.

“We were outside the box in our approach, and I thought that that was actually going to kind of hinder us because I thought that the awards were going to be a little bit more conservative, but that thinking outside and innovative approach to the special event coverage, the category that we won, was actually the thing that set us apart when viewing some of the other reels and viewing some of the other nominations as well,” Whalen said.

Young@Heart, a chorus that started in 1982 in Northampton at a meal site for the elderly and now tours internationally, has members ranging from the age of 75 to 93 years old, according to their website. Whalen is the producer and director of the video — a collaboration between Northampton High School, Northampton Open Media, and Young@Heart.

“For us to get nominated is rare — for us to win is extremely rare,” Whalen said.
